You may have heard that the demand for nurses has been growing over the last several years, and that there is a shortage of qualified candidates in the field. It may even be one of the reasons that you sought out nursing as a career option.

As the baby boomer population in the US ages, health care needs continue to rise and to become more complex, and the need for quality caregivers has grown more urgent.

Nurses are a critical element to a strong healthcare system, providing essential care to patients in hospitals, long term care facilities, and even in patient’s homes, to name just a few places. Nursing remains a strong career choice for those with the right combination of knowledge, skills, compassion, and expertise.

Nursing in particular is no exception, and diversity plays a critical role in providing all patients with the quality and specific kind of care that they need.

Patients come from a broad range of cultural backgrounds, and the healthcare industry should also reflect that in order to best serve the needs of their clients. Nurses bring their own unique experiences to the field, and this only serves to strengthen it.

Diversity should and must be valued in nursing in order to ensure a strong system that represents patients from all walks of life and that is capable of serving their unique healthcare needs.

“A very interesting article written by Kati Kleber BSN, RN.”

Though this might be stating the obvious, I need to be heard: there is not a formula for the perfect preceptor—perfect preceptors do NOT exist! Granted, precepting can be a thankless job.

I know nurses who precept other nurses for free, meaning zero compensation from the hospital they work for. In fact, many preceptors do not have the choice of whether or not they will precept during any given shift and are just thrust into the job!

Think of all the talking and teaching and time and knowledge preceptors are expected to part with–all under the usual pressures of getting the job done. Yeah, so while being an orientee can kinda stink, being a preceptor can induce burn-out.

Anyway, I came up preceptor personalities that I think most new orientees encounter:

1. First off is the “Teacher.” These nurses know it all and love sharing their knowledge with orientees. They are loved by their coworkers and especially management because they will take on any orientee under any circumstances and teach the newbie the ropes. The only issue with “the teacher” is that they are often perfectionists and can snap at any moment. Watch out because it will be a crack heard around the world and the fallout can be severe.

2. The second type of preceptor is “Out-of-it.” “Out-of-it” does his job and manages to make the orinetees feel like they are in the way 99% of the time. Nothing is explained, nothing is taught, and the orientees are often on their own. The “Out-of-it” preceptor’s best feature is that the orientees learn hands-on and, yes, make mistakes. As long as the orientees don’t kill anyone, they can learn a lot by jumping in and doing everything without direction. Of course, if the orientees have any sense, they’ll ask for another preceptor!

3. Another preceptor I’ve encountered is “Hands-off.” In other words, the orientee will keep her HANDS OFF the patients while this nurse is in charge, and this kind of preceptor will do EVERYTHING while not imparting one iota of knowledge.

4. One of the best preceptor’s out there is the “Co-worker.” This person will work with their orientee, make a plan to provide good care to the patient while teaching along the way, and provide hands-on experience because they encourage the orientee to do as much as possible. If an orientee gets a “co-worker” they should count their blessings and make sure to provided a thank-you gift at the end of the whole ordeal!

The reality is that a good or bad preceptor makes or breaks orientation for a new nurse. So what have I learned? As a nurse on orientation, it’s important that we give our preceptors a fair chance and try to work with them.

Seems like everyone at work has their phone at the ready – checking into it whenever they have a quick break (where allowed). And a new study from Columbia University School of Nursing shows that it’s often a good thing. Nurses using a decision support app on their mobile devices are significantly more likely to effectively diagnose weight issues, depression and tobacco use.

The study gave a group of nearly 400 RNs enrolled in the school’s nurse practitioner programs apps to use on their mobile devices. Some nursing students received the “evidence-based decision support tools” mobile app. The app was able to calculate body mass index scores, provide prompts about tobacco use and give questions for depression screening. Other nurses received a different app that only allowed them to record patient exam results.

The most significant advantage of using the decision support app came in diagnosing obese patients. Nurses using the decision support app had a diagnosis rate of 33.9 percent for obese and overweight patients, compared to 4.8 percent for nurses using the simple record-keeping app.

The decision support app also led to an 11.9 percent diagnosis rate for tobacco use, with 2.3 percent for nurses with the other app. The depression diagnosis rate for the decision app was 8.8 percent, compared to 0.2 percent with the other app.

Many apps are currently being developed specifically to help nurses both on and off the job. We recently reported on an app designed to simplify nursing schedules, as well as apps that every ER nurse needs.

Do you use apps or websites on your mobile device during your workday? Do you find technology helping your career or getting in the way? Let us know in the comments section!

December 6, 2013 – “The nurses I work with are the smartest, funniest people I know. Our work causes us to problem-solve and to think critically about everything, and that leads us to coming up with solutions in every aspect of our lives. It just fits that we would be inventors,” remarked Stacey Tatroe, RN, BSN, inventor of RN I.D. Scrubs.

Fellow nurse entrepreneur Sarah Mott, RN, agrees. “My colleagues and I were always making little inventions to provide patient care–like things to elevate a leg or to make an IV work. But we weren’t thinking about these as inventions. That is why I wanted to encourage other nurses to pursue their inventions and to bring their products to market.”

Mott has recently started her own company, Nurse Born. Her vision is to market products created by nurses that are inspired by practical experience.

“I want to encourage nurses to think about the needs of their colleagues and patients and then to pursue their ideas,” said Mott. “As the company grow, I would like to hire nurses who, because of an injury, can no longer tolerate long hours on the floor.”

Mott’s own work-related injury is part of the story of how she became a nurse inventor and a business owner.

“It has been a very long road. It started when I was working as a staff nurse on a post-op ortho floor. My neck was bothering me and I was uncomfortable with the stethoscope hanging on my neck. It also bothered me to keep an item that carried so many germs so close to my face. I was looking for an alternative way to carry it and I couldn’t find anything, and I thought someone should invent something,” she explained.

A few months later, her injury had progressed to the point that she had to take some time off work. At home and bored, she started experimenting with household items to create a stethoscope clip. Once she assembled a workable clip, she began pursuing a patent and was accepted into a free program where a local university student helped her apply for it. An engineer acquaintance of hers was willing to create a prototype.

In due time, her Stethoscope Holster became a reality, and is now the first product to be marketed through Nurse Born.

Mott says her biggest challenge so far is just getting the word out about her product.

“My experience as a nurse has helped me in my new career as an entrepreneur. I learned to be more confident and to trust my own judgment,” she stated. “Nursing helps you develop good instincts about people because you are constantly interacting with different kinds of people and personalities.”

Along the path of bringing her product to market, Mott was mentored by members of a local small business association as well as other nurse inventors she found through online research. She would love to provide that same kind of support to other nurse inventors and encourages them to contact her.

Tatroe is one of the inventors who mentored Mott.

Tatroe works as an ER nurse at Wellstar Health Systems in Atlanta, Ga., and fell into the role of nurse entrepreneur through a different route.

After working as an LPN for six years, she had completed her RN licensure and wanted to celebrate.

“For work that day, I hand-made scrubs that said RN and wore a sash and a crown!” she said. “What was so interesting was that colleagues I had worked with for years were surprised to find out that I wasn’t already an RN. Even though our licensure is written on our IDs, clearly no one was reading that. But they saw it when it was written on my scrubs.”

“It is frustrating for patients when they don’t know who is walking into your room. Some hospitals use a color-coding system, and that can be helpful for the staff, but the code often remains unclear to patients, family members and providers who don’t work at the facility. I.D. Scrubs communicate to the patient, ‘I am your nurse. I am the one who is here to take care of you and answer your questions.’”

Tatroe pursued a patent and contacted her favorite scrub manufacturer, Cherokee Uniforms, to pitch her idea. They are now marketing her line as RN I.D. Scrubs.

Tatroe agrees with Mott that marketing can be the most challenging part of inventing a product and getting it off the ground.

“Every time I am at a trade show or show another nurse these scrubs, they love them and they ‘get it’ immediately. The challenge is getting the word out and letting nurses know that I.D. Scrubs are available,” she remarked. “I hope we will be able to expand the line to include IDs for all scrub-wearing clinicians and staff.”

Tatroe urges other nurses to pursue their ideas.

“Go for it!” she said. “You will never know unless you try. Think of all the innovations in history–what if those inventors hadn’t given it a go? You have to put yourself out there and work for it. Nothing comes easy or free.”

“Written by Jonathan Reichman – our Account Manager & Executive Recruiter.”

Jonathan from Advanced Care this week is bringing you an inside peek into how an RN’s dream may be just around the corner. Often in the recruitment world, there are open positions, and available nurses. The system is simple: search for an RN meeting the qualifications and get him/her the next job he/she is searching for. Now, it is easy when a nurse is actively on the job market, when things have gotten to the point that he/she needs to be very proactive in order to secure a new employment immediately. The secret of recruitment is that while there may be qualified candidates actively searching, there are many qualified nurses who equally feel the need to find a new job- they just don’t know all the possible ways to make themselves visible.

This is where our team of recruiters comes in. We know when a good job comes in, and we know there are very good nurses out there who would be interested, but just don’t know how to tell us. We use various external and internal tools available to find RN’s that have at some point in the last few years done some action that has gotten them noticed. Many RN’s work very hard and just don’t have the time to be the one doing all the work to find a new job, so we come in to soften and ease in the process of transition.
I have had the privilege of working with many RN’s that were desperately searching for a better job, but had not gotten noticed, and therefore had been having a hard time finding a new opportunity. Here at Advanced Care, we try and seek out the RN’s that do not know how to find the best jobs, in addition to the ones that seem to know all the tips and tricks.

If you are interested in finding a better job, whether it is a better salary, benefits for you and your family, or just a better shift so that you can maximize your day, let us do most of the work and take that additional pressure off your shoulders, and carry it onto our own. Send us your resume and we will do the rest, and we will remember you for years to come.
